India vs South Africa 2018 ODI and T20 Series - Time for the Shorter Formats

India vs South Africa 2018 ODI T20 Series

After facing losses in the first two test matches, India managed to turn tables on South Africa and snatch a win in the third test match. This rejuvenated Indian team would look to reverse poor bilateral record in South Africa by clinching ODI and T20 series. Although beating South Africa in South Africa, in any form of cricket is almost impossible; still the shorter formats of the game come with a lot of uncertainties. On one hand South Africa have a strong team and home support, India have equally good team with a lot of positive intent.

Head to Head

India have had a tough time facing South Africa in their own backyard. In 28 ODI matches played in South Africa, India could win just five. This poor run doesn't provide any encouragement to Kohli and his men who are trying to improve team's record overseas. But a series win especially in countries like South Africa or Australia have proven to be really fruitful for teams for their future performances. Such teams have seen a surge in confidence with a golden run to continue.

India vs South Africa 2018 Test Series - A Test of Champions

India vs South Africa 2018 Test Series Preview

Sony Pictures Sports Network has come up with a TV advertisement which portrays Indian fans heavily disappointed and yearning for revenge. This ad revolves around a fact that India has never won a test series against South Africa since their first tour in 1992. While the advertisement went little too extreme and hard to digest that Indian fans would never be this disappointed that they would break television sets or shave off their moustaches following a loss against South Africa. This could certainly be a possibility if the loss came against Pakistan. But again, it rightly portrays the fact of win-less streak in South Africa.

Away test series wins, especially if they come in South Africa, Australia or England are always great. India as well as the other sub-continent teams are still longing for a series win in Australia and South Africa. Cricket fans here in India do have a lot of expectations from the Kohli's XI. This team is full of positive intent and they play fearless cricket. Kohli's intentions were pretty clear right from the time he had to take over the captaincy from Dhoni mid of the Australian tour.

Squad Details

India - Virat Kohli (captain), Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Parthiv Patel, Jasprit Bumrah

South Africa - Faf du Plessis (captain), Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Theunis de Bruyn, AB de Villiers, Dean Elgar, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn

What should be India's game plan against South Africa?

After toppling all the teams on your way to the apex of ICC Test Rankings comes a lot of responsibilities. Teams could crumble under pressure to maintain the top spot. Virat Kohli and his men have seen many such situations where they have stood tall. Facing South Africa in their own backyard isn't easy. We all know how best of the teams have failed against their quickies and resolute batsmen.

Good part about the Indian batting line up, most of them are in good form. With Kookaburra ball, South Africa pacers would look dangerous especially in the first 20 odd overs. This means the opening pair needs to be mentally prepared to play out the first hour and half confidently. If they manage to stick to the crease for half of the first session, things would be relatively easier. Hence, Murali Vijay and the second opener (that can be Shikhar Dhawan or KL Rahul) will have to hang out there and at the same time keep scoring runs to put the likes of Dale Steyn, Philander and Rabada under pressure.

One down comes Pujara who would add a lot of strength to the batting line up. Just like Hashim Amla, he will hang on at one side scoring runs on loose balls. Having said so, his partner at the other end may have to be a bit aggressive to keep the scoreboard ticking. Since the late 90s we have seen how Australian team has changed the face of test cricket with aggressive batting. Post that, teams scoring at a rate of 3.5 plus have generally dominated the game. Virat Kohli and Ajikya Rahane would play a vital for in this aspect. The think tank may go ahead with Rohit Sharma (considering he is in a golden touch right now) instead of Hardik Pandya to strengthen the batting line up.

As far as including a spinner is concerned, the selection would revolve around the pitch predictions. If the pitch suggests, the team may go ahead with just one spinner and that could be R Ashwin considering he can extract more bounce from the wicket. His solid batting also is an add on to the team.

Talking about the pace attack from India, it looks full of variety. Umesh Yadav comes with pace and bounce, Shami's ball skids and can create uncertainty in the minds of batsmen, Ishant Sharma will maintain his bouncy line outside off whereas Bhuvaneshwar and Bumrah can create havoc with their swinging deliveries.

Having said so, with the history behind them and favourable home conditions; South Africa have an upper hand. It would take something really special from the Indian team to clinch a test series in South Africa. And trust me, if that happens; that would be one of the greatest series wins ever in the history of Indian test cricket.

Stay tuned with Sony Ten TV channels and SonyLiv for live cricket telecast and streaming of India's tour to South Africa.

Well, although we are bit tired of bilateral series between India and Sri Lanka, let us all not forget Sri Lanka is playing a test series in India after 9 long years! Now that brings some excitement. Not so far in the past at home, Sri Lanka had to suffer a 3-0 loss against India. But they can take some inspiration from their efforts against Pakistan in UAE. While Sri Lanka still languishes and struggles to regain its lost glory, India under Virat Kohli is creating records one after the other.

India would try to continue its unbeaten streak against Sri Lanka at home. Kohli would also eye yet another test series victory at home before heading to South Africa with a more confident team.

As far as the limited overs cricket is concerned, Sri Lanka may try their luck harder. Test series could be purely dominated by the hosts but ODI and T20 cricket still leaves a scope of uncertainties.

Let's see if this series turns out to be yet another one sided affair for India, or will Sri Lanka provide some resistance. Stay tuned with HotStar for live cricket match streaming and videos.

2nd T20 at Rajkot - 4 November 2017
3rd T20 at Thiruvananthpuram - 7 November 2017

Head to Head

India and New Zealand have had close encounters head to head. We often believe the likes of Australia or South Africa have been a tough competition for India. But when it comes to limited overs cricket, New Zealand have given some real tough time to India.

Out of the 98 ODI matches played between these two teams, India has won 49 and New Zealand has won 43. Close enough!

Surprisingly, New Zealand has never faced a defeat against India in a T20 International match. They have won all the five T20 matches played against India.

Prediction

Virat Kohli and his men are on a march to victories. They registered a comprehensive ODI series win over Australia recently. Series win over New Zealand would be another feather in Virat's hat. Meanwhile New Zealand would love to make a mark with this tour.

If we compare the recent form, India are doing way better than the visitors. Having said so, Kane Williamson has made his intentions clear. He and his men would play aggressively to put some pressure on the inform Indian team.

If we talk about prediction, it highly seems the results would be in favour of India. But the hosts may find it hard to clean sweep the series, especially the T20 International matches.

Eager Fans

Fans are absolutely eager for this cricket series. Being played around the Indian festivals, fans love to watch cricketing crackers in the form of sixes and tumbling wickets. Who doesn't like to watch a tussle between two of the world's best batsmen Kohli and Smith. The series also brings the best out of the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Warner, Finch and many more to name.

Smith's strategy

After a not so good tour to Bangladesh, we can expect cautious approach from the Australian side. They were defeated by Bangladesh in the first test followed by a win to level the series. Smith has clearly stated that they can taste success to a great extent if they can keep Kohli silent. But that isn't going to be easy, especially when Kohli's bat smiles against the Kangaroo bowlers.

Kohli at the front foot

Kohli and men are high at confidence. They won nine straight matches against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka which is one of the best performances for any touring teams. Virat Kohli and the whole team would love to dominate over the Aussies right from the word go. If Indian bowlers can contain the Australian aggression in batting, that would be like half battle won. As far as Indian batting line up is concerned, its currently the best in the world.

In the end, whoever wins, fans would surely be served with some great quality cricket. So sit back and relax, India vs Australia cricket series.
