Viru's 219 creates history - record books rewritten

Virender Sehwag once again compelled us all to rewrite the record books. Playing as a captain he scored a dazzling 219 runs in Indore against West Indies. 219 runs in an ODI innings is just like pulling an elephant out of the hat!

Who apart from Sachin can you imagine to reach this feat in the modern cricket? I can imagine only Virender Sehwag and Chris Gayle! Not to forget this is the player who scored 250 plus runs in a day in Test cricket against a formidable bowling attack of South Africa. This is the player who has damaged most of the bowling attacks in the world.

Let us have a look at the new records that he created when he scored this unforgettable double ton!

  • Highest individual score in ODI history goes to his name now. He broke the record of Sachin Tendulkar who scored 200 not out against South Africa in Gwalior in 2010. At the same time, Madhya Pradesh becomes the only state where two double tons in ODIs are registered as Indore and Gwalior are both located in Madhya Pradesh.
  • 219 is the highest score by any ODI captain. He broke the record of Sanath Jayasuriya who as a captain scored 189 runs in Sharjah (2000) against India.
  • 25 boundaries equals the record of highest number of boundaries in ODI innings. Sachin hit 25 boundaries against South Africa at Gwalior.
  • Sehwag is the only cricketer to have scored a triple century in Test Cricket and a double ton in ODI cricket.

There are many more records to name which he broke yesterday at Indore. That innings was purely a treat to watch which stunned the cricketers and fans around the world.

Sachin Tendulkar who previously hold this record said "Well done Viru. I am happy that my teammate an Indian has broke my record"

This is a remarkable feat that was scripted in Indore. It took only a year and a half for someone to break an unbelievable record that was set by Sachin in Gwalior. Let us see how long does it take now for someone to break the record of 219 runs in an ODI innings.

Who knows probably it would be Sehwag again who breaks his own record. And mark my word! Since Gayle is out of picture for the time being, Sehwag still looks the only contender to break Lara's record of 400 runs in a test innings. Nothing to blow out of proportion, but he really looks the only player who can go somewhere near that record too!
